PERSONALITY
The first thing we see from Jyn Erso is a cold, emotionless demeanor that comes from being trained as a child soldier for Saw Gerrera's rebels. Due to witnessing her mother's death when she was eight and being abandoned by her father immediately thereafter, and then subsequently abandoned by Saw at the age of sixteen, Jyn did not put stock in friendships or putting her faith in other people. She had herself and that was enough for a long time. She approaches people as problems that need to be solved or a means to an end, preferring a solitary life.
Her introduction comes by way of an Imperial prison camp that she's been in for six months, arrested on charges of forgery (among others, presumably) during her time on her own. Upon her "rescue" Jyn uses the distraction of another prisoner to beat up the Rebels sent to rescue her and leap out of the tank and to her freedom. This is short lived as Jyn is immediately subdued by K-2SO but it's the first display of her quick temper and absolute desire for freedom.
She also frequently lacks trust in people. She doesn't trust the rebels who rescue her, she doesn't trust the rebels on the base, and she only begrudgingly trusts Cassian, more out of necessity than anything. This self-preservation defense seems to be validated when she finds out Cassian was tasked to assassinate her father, but through the continued support of the rest of Rogue One, she finds herself trusting willingly. It's hard not to when they continue to back up their words with solid actions. By the end, when they come to her with a way to Scarif, her trust is secure and she seems surprised to have friends that will support her.
Defiant and impetuous, Jyn puts little stock in the politics of situations. She just wants to live and, as she tells Saw Gerrera, the rebellion brings nothing but pain and destruction to her life. She lost both her parents and then Saw, what has the rebellion even given her? This comes to a head when she watches her father's transmission and realizes that everything he had done was to protect her. He sacrificed himself to make sure that she would be safe and be able to live in a world without the Empire. Seeing her father again brings forth emotions she had preferred buried under layers of anger, but it also brings home everything Mon Mothma and Cassian had tried to tell her about the benefit of the Rebellion.
Losing her father again doesn't diminish her anger, but it does soften it with a desire to fulfill her father's final revenge and make sure that the Death Star is destroyed.
Once decided that she is going to follow her father's instructions and find the plans for the Death Star, Jyn is beyond impatient with the council's unwillingness to take action. Luckily, she has this group of friends that saddle up to head out to Scarif without permission. It's that moment when Cassian steps up and offers to go without orders that Jyn's uncertain trust in him is solidified. She had called him a Storm Trooper for following orders he didn't believe in and now here he was willing to defy orders of the entire high council.
The attack on Scarif is not without it's dangers, but Rogue One goes in knowing this and ready to sacrifice everything for the rebellion. They will take every chance until their are no chances left. Jyn gives a surprisingly uplifting speech to the men before they set off, speaking of the hope this rebellion will bring before saying farewell to Baze, Chirrut, and Bodhi. She sets off with Cassian and K2 to find the plans and this separates them from the rest of her team. She can only hope they make it out safely.
When the two of them are separated from K2, Jyn offers him her blaster, calling back to when they'd first set out together and he complained that she had a blaster and he didn't. Jyn offering the blaster is the last peg needed to secure their mutual sibling-like affection. Later, when she and Cassian hear the droid's death, she is clearly affected but it doesn't break her resolve or regress her back to the sullen, anti-teamwork person before. Her only hope now is to make all their sacrifices worth it. When she seemingly loses Cassian, that same resolve is what drives her to keep going. In her final meeting with Krennic, she unknowingly repeats the same words her parents had told him before they died, "You've lost."
She sacrifices herself for the rebellion willingly, embracing her friend, and becoming one with the Force, trusting in it the way her mother had told her to so long ago.
APPEARANCE
A diminutive woman, Jyn stands at 5'3" and is basically made of muscle from years of training and fighting to survive on her own. She has faintly auburnish brown hair like her mother that she wears tied back in a bun like her father was prone to do and she has Galen's green eyes, flecked with gold -- hence the nickname Stardust. She is on the thin side from over a decade of being food insecure and tends to favor dark, neutral colors to blend in and not draw attention to herself. Her body is speckled with a fair number of scars.

HISTORY
Jyn Erso was born on the Outer Rim ice planet of Vallt in 21 BBY. Born within a Separatist prison due to her father's refusal to use his intelligence and knowledge of kyber crystals to help the Confederacy in their war against the Galactic Republic, Jyn spent approximately six months in the care of her mother and the caretakers of the complex. At that point, Jyn and her parents were unexpectedly ordered onto a carriage and sent to a spaceport where, to the great surprise of her parents, Lieutenant Commander Orson Krennic of the Republic Navy, who Galen knew from their time in the Republic's Futures Program, was waiting to extract them and bring them to Coruscant.
For the next several months, Jyn lived in an apartment in Coruscant's Galactic City while her father looked for work. As the Clone Wars approached its end, Jyn's father was notified by Krennic that he had been offered a position in Helical HyperCom on the planet Lokori. Accepting the offer, the Ersos moved to the world and settled there while Galen worked on the company's renewable energy project.
In 19 BBY, after several attacks by the Separatists on the planet, the Confederacy launched a large assault on the Helical HyperCom facility and the surrounding area. With a large force of B1 battle droids advancing on the complex, Jyn's parents fled the facility with her in a carrier into the surrounding settlement. With battles raging on multiple sides, the Ersos were rerouted by a group of clone troopers but were eventually surrounded. With the battle droids approaching and killing the remaining Lokori in the vicinity, Galen placed himself in front of Jyn and Lyra. To their surprise and relief however, the droids suddenly shut down. Unknown to them, the Clone Wars had ended.
When she was three years old, Jyn, along with her mother, Has Obitt and Nari Sable, traveled to the Outer Rim planet of Alpinn on Krennic's request to help with the archaeological project being conducted there. While there, Jyn would go exploring with the three of them and would revel in being at the center of attention back at the archaeological camp.
Later, Galen and Lyra shared their doubts about Krennic and realized Galen's kyber research was in fact being used for nefarious ends. Knowing they could not merely resign, the pair decided to attempt an escape. Arranging an extraction point and time with Has Obitt, Galen and Lyra, with a four year-old Jyn in her arms, left the complex and struggled through the parading crowds. However, with Obitt having been caught by Krennic, the smuggler's colleague, former Onderonian freedom fighter Saw Gerrera, met with the Ersos and led them to his own starship. Leaving Coruscant, Gerrera told Galen and Lyra about a world they could go into hiding on: Lah'mu.
For the next four years, Jyn lived with her parents in a homestead on the remote world of Lah'mu in order to avoid the Empire. In the event of compromise, the Ersos established a plan which involved a hatched room hidden underneath a rock that Jyn would escape to. This plan was put into effect in 13 BBY, when Orson Krennic, accompanied by a contingent of death troopers, arrived at their home. After contacting Saw Gerrera, Galen said a solemn goodbye to Jyn before heading out to meet with Krennic, while Lyra led Jyn around the back. Giving Jyn a kyber crystal on a necklace, Lyra told Jyn to go to the hideout before leaving also to confront Krennic. However, Jyn decided to follow and hide in the long grass, watching as Lyra pulled a blaster pistol on Krennic. As he ordered his troopers to fire, Lyra managed to fire off one shot into Krennic's shoulder before being killed. Realizing it was time to get away, Jyn ran to the hideout as Krennic took Galen and ordered his death troopers to search for her.
After spending some time in the underground room, Jyn heard footsteps approaching above. When the hatch opened, she saw Gerrera standing there, who urged her to come out. Gerrera raised the young girl as his own daughter. For the next eight years, Jyn became a soldier working for Gerrera's insurgents, whose actions were considered by many to be immoral, although Gerrera attempted to shield Jyn from some of the worst atrocities he and the others committed. Jyn found a connection with the hardened warriors but when a crippling setback occurred among the rebels, Gerrera abandoned Jyn, believing her origins could compromise herself and his cause.
For the next five years, Jyn focused on surviving, becoming a street figure, smuggler, and petty criminal. Jyn racked up an extensive list of warrants and arrests, but she was able to escape from prison when captured, either through help from friends outside the prison or by bribing (or lying about bribing) security guards. Notably, none of her crimes involved harming or conning civilians - her only targets were Imperial personnel and other criminals. Despite her rough life, Jyn was also not a murderer, killing only in self-defense, defense of others, or in war.
