[ she swallows some of the cake back, eyes watering because it's so much but it's so good, and repeats herself. ]

Are you trying to seduce me, Andor?

[ she snorts a laugh as she wipes the frosting off her lips and licks it off her fingers. he has more cakes on that plate so she doesn't much bother trying to savor this one. what she has tasted was very delicious. ]

[evasives]

[ it's not a serious question, but she licks her fingers two seconds later and he is strangely jarred by it?? no, that's not what he's doing, right?? no way. they're just hanging out. he just happened to lure her in with all the things she likes. ]

[ he lets out his own laugh, raises his eyebrows. ]

Are you sure it is not the other way around?

[realists]

[ jyn's middle finger is in her mouth and she slides it out between her lips to flip him off with an angelic smile.

MAYBE SHE FUCKING IS, WE DON'T KNOW ]

[evasives]

[ there's a pause where he just sort of watches her for a second, eyes darting briefly to her mouth, before he realizes she's flipping him off. ]

[ and then he laughs. not just a short puff, a real, genuine laugh that lasts for a few seconds. ]

Well you figured out the way to do it.

[realists]

[ cassian jeron andor just laughed. jyn has heard huffs and puffs and snickers but a laugh. a laugh is like a priceless gift and her expression explodes with a delighted grin. ]

What's that on your face, Andor? Is that a smile?

[evasives]

[ his smile doesn't disappear, but it quiets when she teases him. he wouldn't call it shyness, just maybe awkwardness, like he's unused to using the muscles that way now that she's drawn attention to it. ]

[ still, the look on her face keeps the smile warm on his. ] It has been known to happen on occasion.

[realists]

[ jyn takes approximately seventeen thousand pictures with the implant, just in case she needs to look back at them at a later date. happy cassian. she recognizes the change because she's seen it before, on the ship when bodhi had gotten them cleared for entry.

her chest squeezes at the fleeting thought of bodhi, her own smile dipping slightly sad before she resettles into some kind of middle ground. ]

It's a good look on you. The occasion should arise more often.

[ she's just saying. ]

[ is this a compliment? is she complimenting him?? smiling is a good look?? what does it mean!! ]

[ despite the thought journey, he hasn't stopped smiling. he's feeling oddly happy, why should he hide it? ]

The occasion is currently still happening, so I suppose it is not going anywhere yet.

[realists]

Good. I like it.

[ their lives have been garbage for the most part, they deserve a rest and a small bit of happiness. even if it's cake in a park. jyn clambers over the fence while cassian goes through the gate like a normal person, striding to the swings because she has decided she wants to swing. ]

This park, I wish it would overrun the city.

[evasives]

[ she likes it. okay. ]

[ is he surprised she climbs over the fence? absolutely not. he's even less surprised she moves towards the swing, following after her and still carrying two plates of desserts. he sits down in the swing beside her. ]

I think the planet itself would prefer that as well.

[realists]

Imagine what good would come if they planted some kriffing trees.

[ no need to terraform if you fix your own fucking planet! she holds her hand out for one of the plates. ]

Do I get to eat now?

[ as if she hadn't inhaled a piece of cake already no more than two minutes ago. ]

[evasives]

The solution being always more trees?

[ he hands over one of the plates. no silverware involved, they can eat with their hands. she already shoved a whole cake into her mouth! ]

Are you sure you have room for more?

[realists]

[ jyn hates using silverware so it's for the best, she has hands that is her silverware! she pops another treat right into her mouth, smiling around it and not bothering to answer. she will always have room for more. making up for a lifetime of being underfed.

she is not small because of genetics, she is small due to poor nutrition, let's get that fact out there. ]

Yes, the solution is more trees. They're oxygenators, they feed the soil, they soak up carbon. Reforestation could go a long way to making the world more habitable -- they've done it on the moon. The second phase of terraforming is introducing plant-life which accelerates oxygen production which makes it habitable for human life. The same exact thing they should be doing on this stupid planet.

[ there is a lot of science involved, sure, but planting trees on every single swath of disused land could help! trees deserve more credit than they get. ecological restoration is important! jyn should get a raise! ]

[evasives]

[ he'd only asked to be idly teasing, but she takes it and runs with it and cassian can't help but listen to every word. she loves nature! therefore, cassian loves listening to her talk about nature! he doesn't have much of a green thumb, but he's always listening to jyn talk about her plants. nerding about trees is no different. ]

[ he's smiling even as she's getting annoyed at what she seems a failure elsewhere. heart eyes motherfucker. ] I am surprised you have not burst in to tell them all this yourself.

[realists]

Maybe I will!

[ she isn't exactly subtle about her eyerolling about priorities and the utter lack of technology that keeps them relatively earth bound, but she doesn't know enough about hyperdrives to float a workable "theory". she is not a mechanic, it is not her job. ]

Why do you think the air is so fresh at Maz's castle?

[ straight up assumes he has been there. ]

[evasives]

[ she's so righteous! it's charming. jyn is full of so many complaints about her work, but it comes from a place of knowledge. ]

I am not disagreeing with you at all, Jyn. I know trees and plant life are very important to breathable air. [ maybe he just wanted to rile her up, yolo. ] Her castle is surrounded by too much green to be anything less.

[ a beat. ] When were you there?

[realists]

[ it's not hard to get jyn going anyway, even when she's pushing off the grass to placidly swing back and forth. she remembers her mama and nari talking on the ship though and one thing they said has always stuck with her

she lives on this dumb planet now, she doesn't want to watch the same thing happen to it by inaction this time. ]

Only a couple years ago, I was going by Kestrel. [ she was there and then on a freighter and then she was being arrested so. maz's castle was a highlight she held on to while she was in prison. ]

[evasives]

[ he likes knowing that he knows how to get her going. maybe it's just because it's a part of her she's shared with him, and not because he tried to seek it out. it was just natural knowledge. ]

I would pass through on and off. It was quite the hub. [ a beat. ] You never know. Maybe we were there at the same time.

[realists]

Maybe we were.

[ some funny feeling twists in jyn's gut. disappointment or... longing? something strange and unfamiliar. it must be disappointment. of course she would be disappointed, cassian is very dear to her and it would have been nice to have known someone for a while that didn't up and die on her.

maybe it would have changed a lot of things, maybe it wouldn't have changed anything at all.

but it would have been more than a week. ]

Guess we'll never know for sure.

[evasives]

[ it's a similar twist that goes through his too. the galaxy is large and expansive and there are so many planets, but the possibility that they both existed on the same one, before meeting at yavin 4? he doesn't know what to make of that. ]

[ he could have known her longer. ]

Not unless Maz herself shows up here too. She seems like the kind of person who would remember us both.

[realists]

She remembers everything, [ jyn agrees.

the diminutive little woman had told jyn stories of her reckless youth (whilst jyn was in the prime of hers) and let her work around the castle for a little pocket credit and pretended not to notice when jyn spent those credits hustling sabacc tables for more credits.

no one could prove she cheated. ]

I wonder what she would say about you.

[evasives]

[ he came through her castle under more than one name, but she always gave him the same exact nod and always used the correct pseudonym. he wonders what maz might have said if he and jyn had shown up at the same time. ]

[ she apparently knew them both, and she never forgets a face. ]

I am not honestly sure I would even want to know.

[ he kind of just assumes she could see Right Through Him to all the bad things. ]

[realists]

What do you think she would say?

[ jyn wants to know what secrets maz would spill about cassian andor, how deep into his soul she would go to lay it out on the table for them. she read jyn like a god damn book. ]

[evasives]

[ he sighs, but offers her a wry, weak smile. ]

Nothing good. I suppose she would recognize what I am fighting for in the rebellion at least.

[ why would maz have anything good to say about him tbh! ]

[realists]

You don't think Maz would have respected that?

[ jyn's eyebrows jump up a bit, countering cassian's wry expression with a disbelieving one of her own. ]

She didn't want war in her home, that doesn't mean she was neutral in her opinion of the Empire. [ she shrugs, pressing her toes into the ground to push off and swing a bit more. ] Besides, she knows a good man when she sees one.
